Don’t Be a Label Whore: A Lesson in Fashion
Label
whore: a term I took from Sarah Dessen’s Just Listen, in which a little
sister only buys certain popular or designer brands. This is typically applied
to the middle school crowd of younger teenagers, but can surely be found in all
ages.

Now,
don’t hate on me for seeming negative. I, too, was once a label whore.
Unfortunately, I started off with strictly Aeropostle and have worked my way
through phases of all American Eagle and J.Crew.

There
is such a variety of clothing and accessories in the world. It’s just unfair to
only buy purses from Coach or velour track suits from Juicy (once upon a time).
Ever since I saw Iris, a documentary about the 94-year-old fashion icon, on
Netflix, I’ve been inspired. Find items to add to your collection and disregard
the value in terms of price, name, brand, store, etc. If you can find white
denim overalls for $45 at Old Navy instead of $100 at Madewell, go for it!
You’re trying to create a look for yourself, not count off the expensive brands
in your closet. This is very important for me to keep in mind as a college
student. I’m trying to stay stylish, while not going broke buying clothes that
will only be on trend for so long.
On
the other hand, it’s not bad to have a staple store- especially one for
timeless classics and those fashion essentials (I’m looking at you, AE Denim).
What I am saying is don’t rely on a single store to provide you with endless
possibilities that the world offers you to wear.
Being
well rounded in the fashion world can only help you.
