Summer in a Smoothie

Nothing says summer to me like a fruity, homemade smoothie! Now, usually I’m the type of girl that orders a “smoothie” that’s all chocolate and peanut butter. I detest anything with bananas in it, which rules out a large majority of the menu. I like making them at home sooo much better because I can put whatever fruit I want in it!

My perfect smoothie contains:
 -  fresh peach
 -  oats
 -  crushed ice
 -  dash of milk

If you don’t have room for a blender- no problem! I use this little gizmo: the Cuisinart Smart Stick® HandBlender. It’s a great size for a one-person smoothie and super easy to clean since the cup and detachable blade section can be put in the dishwasher.

Without a top, some of the ingredients on top can easily fly out while they’re still dry (the oats are usually my problem). A quick fix is to hold a paper towel on top. Another tip with the hand blender is to put the ingredients in the cup in the order I listed them, starting with the yogurt on bottom. This keeps the fruit and ice from sinking to the bottom and missing the blade. I like my smoothies to be a thicker consistency, but not chunky!

The Breakfast Essentials is a powder that adds a lot of vitamins and minerals! I’ve found that the addition of it tends to make the smoothie less thick. Next time, I’m going to see how using a portion of the packet goes. Also, I’ve only tried the chocolate flavor, which seems a bit odd with my choice of fruit. Maybe it’d be better with strawberries!

The best thing about this smoothie is that it’s a no-brainer. When I first started making them I found most of the ingredients already in my pantry and refrigerator. Any ingredients you don’t have are easy to buy and not weird, exotic, or expensive. And everything is pretty natural (especially if you freeze your own fruit) so yay healthiness!

Start with these ingredients and perfect your own favorite smoothie with different fruits!
